Over the past five years there has been a rise in fellowship programs administered by both impact investors and social enterprises. These programs provide participants with a great opportunity to learn more about certain sectors, countries, and social impact solutions. Fellowship programs can be short term or long term in duration and often focus on both leadership and skill building for participants and host organizations. In this series we share some of the most well regarded fellowships in the impact investing and social impact space.
Acumen Fund aims to build the next generation of social impact leaders by providing a 12-month leadership training program for experienced professionals. They host both a Global and Regional Fellowship Program with intakes on an annual basis.
Participants boast about the holistic leadership training and the close bonds that they make within their co-hort. They also join a strong alumni network of individuals who often end up staying in the sector. Some have successfully used their fellowship experience to continue working at Acumen Fund.
Things to Note:
- In many cases, participants are working within one of Acumen Fund’s portfolio organizations and not directly deploying capital for Acumen Fund.
- Staying true to the organization’s mission, their portfolio companies are mostly located in emerging markets. Be ready to relocate!
- The candidate pool for the fellowship is extremely strong with over 1,000 applications for roughly 10 spots (in the Global Fellowship Program.)
