Latin America Practice Lead – Village Capital

By February 2, 2018 No Comments
Job Description
The way we invest in ideas is broken. Nearly half of all venture capital in the world is invested in just three US states. In 2016, women received just 2% of venture capital funding. And far too little capital is going to companies who are solving significant global challenges in environmental sustainability and expanding access to economic opportunity.
At Village Capital, we’re building a different system. Over the last seven years, our transparent approach to investing has changed the conversation. We’ve made more than 70 early stage investments to date around the world in companies focused on solutions in energy, financial inclusion, health, agriculture, education and more. 90% of our portfolio is based outside Silicon Valley, New York and Boston; and 38% is women-led. To date, over 90% of these ventures are still operating, and 15 have already exited profitably. Village Capital has worked with over 50 companies in Latin America since 2015, investing in 8 companies across the region.
Village Capital is seeking a Practice Lead, Latin America to lead the firm’s efforts to transform the way we find, train and invest in entrepreneurs solving problems in economic opportunity and environmental sustainability across Latin America. The Latin America Practice Lead will be responsible for raising capital from a growing network of partners who share our passion for democratizing access to capital for early stage entrepreneurs, designing our program strategy in Latin America, and overseeing a team of talented individuals focused on finding and training entrepreneurs throughout the region.
The Practice Lead role has five main functions:
    • Lead business development for Village Capital’s activities in the region.
    • Support founders addressing important problems in our target sectors: financial inclusion (FinTech), health, agriculture, energy and education.
    • Build a team that drives organizational sustainability and growth.
    • Design and execute Village Capital’s expansion and investment strategies for Latin America.
    • Establish Village Capital as a leading brand in supporting entrepreneurship in Latin America.

Traits we’re looking for:

    • Passionate: You deeply believe that entrepreneurs can and will solve critical challenges facing Latin America in financial inclusion, health, agriculture, education and energy.
    • Global: You value the challenge of working in a global team dispersed across 5 continents. This means you are a very strong communicator, extremely responsive, enjoy working collaboratively, and at the same time can solve problems autonomously. You are also flexible in your work hours to take calls/meetings during evenings to account for time zone differences.
    • Leader: You are a strong manager and are excited about coaching a small team of talented young professionals in building their career path with Village Capital. You thrive when given responsibility and the runway to build something of your own. You are willing to take ownership & make independent strategic decisions that align with the larger organizational vision and goals.
    • Analytic: You are capable of testing new business models, identifying best practices and constantly improving.
    • Organized: You are extremely good at organizing your time and balancing multiple priorities.
    • Empathetic: You are a fantastic listener and can swiftly identify the needs of multiple stakeholders, including entrepreneurs, mentors, partners and your team.
    • Resilient: You are familiar with working in a growing organization. Rather than let challenges get you down, they motivate you to identify the root problems and proactively implement solutions that lead toward organizational efficiency and sustainability.

Desired Qualifications

    • At least five years of experience working with startups in Latin America; specific experience most relevant to the job may includes successfully raising investment capital, and/or successfully scaling a start-up business, successfully executing business development partnerships with corporate partners or foundations, or and/or investing in early-stage companies in the region.
    • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, in related field.
    • Deep understanding of the entrepreneurship landscape in Latin America, ideally with direct experience in FinTech and/or health, which are two of our strongest focus sectors in Latin America.
    • Business fluency in English and Spanish is required.
Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
Due to a large volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted by the Village Capital team.
